Tocopilla Toco Railroad (1st part)

El ferrocarril de Tocopilla al Toco se inauguró en 1890 bajo el título the Anglo Chilian Nitrate & Railway Co., para transportar Salitre y Yodo desde las Minas de María Elena y Pedro de Valdivia al Puerto de Tocopilla. Su trocha es 1.067 mm. Pertenece a Soquimich y es el último tren salitrero que queda.

Presenta dos secciones electrificadas separadas. Entre Tocopilla y Tigre (39 kilómetros), y entre María Elena y Pedro de Valdivia (cerca de 45 kilómetros)

The Tocopilla Toco Railroad is a 1.067 mm gauge railroad that was inaugurated in 1890 as the Anglo Chilean Nitrate & Railway Co., to transport nitrate and iodine from the María Elena and Pedro de Valdivia Mines to the Tocopilla Port. It currently belongs to Soquimich and it is the only nitrate train still operating today. There are two electrified sections: Tocopilla-Tigre (39 km), and María Elena-Pedro de Valdivia (near 45 km)

El tramo entre Tocopilla y Tigre era operado antiguamente con locomotoras Kitson Meyer, siendo electrificado en 1928 y desde entonces hasta el día de hoy, la tracción es efectuada por 7 infatigables Locomotoras General Electric Bo-Bo, numeradas del 601 al 607, que deben vencer una brusca geografía, con pendientes de 4 % y cerradas curvas de hasta 55 metros, tirando trenes de hasta 170 tons de subida, y de hasta 700 tons. en bajada.
